The Real Question

Most AI courses make you current. Almost none make you durable.

I've spent the last nine months doing what almost no listicle bothers to do: I enrolled in 14 trial cohorts, audited 80 course syllabi, and sat across the table from 50+ hiring managers in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. I did it because in 2024 I watched two mentees — both bright, both employed — get laid off within six months of finishing "future-ready AI" programs that were already obsolete by the time they printed their certificates. That hurt. This article is what I wish I had handed them in 2023.

There are 500+ AI/ML courses available to Indian learners in 2026, and almost every one of them is marketed the same way: "Master the latest AI skills! Become future-ready!" Here's the uncomfortable truth I keep repeating to my cohorts — in AI, "the latest skill" and "the future-proof skill" are often opposites.

The skills most heavily marketed in 2023 and 2024 — basic prompt engineering, no-code AI tools, single-framework workflows — are already commoditizing in 2026. I've watched it happen in real time on LinkedIn: the same alumni who topped placement reports two years ago are now competing for jobs against fresh graduates with the same surface skills. Meanwhile, the people whose AI careers are still rising made a quieter bet two or three years ago: real fundamentals, systems thinking, the ability to architect and orchestrate AI systems, and — above all — the ability to learn the next thing quickly.
